What is PUE and what does it have to do with DCOI?

Many people ask: “What is PUE?”

The answer is, “Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).”

PUE is a metric used to determine data center energy efficiency.

How do you determine PUE? You divide total data center source energy by IT source energy.

PUE1

The closer the number moves down to 1, the more efficient the data center. PUE alerts data center management on how close they are to their efficiency goals. Measuring PUE over time can help determine the most effective energy saving initiatives.

PUE was developed by The Green Grid and introduced in 2006 as a means to calculate data center energy efficiency and is the standard measuring stick upon which the data center industry continues to rely.

Furthermore, PUE is one of the 5 primary optimization metrics mandated by the Data Center Optimization Initiative (DCOI) – the government mandate requiring federal data centers to become more energy efficient.

  1. PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness)
  2. Energy Metering
  3. Virtualization
  4. Server Utilization and Automated Monitoring
  5. Facilities Utilization

As one of the leading Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) providers for U.S. Federal Agencies, Nlyte provides all 5 of the optimization metrics stipulated by the DCOI.

Nlyte’s team of Federal DCOI experts is ready to help your federal agency comply with the DCOI mandate.
