Villars September 2014 IDC OPINION Putting into place a proactive datacenter infrastructure asset life-cycle management protocol can reduce datacenter costs, increase the ability to respond to new business needs faster, and mitigate risk and downtime. IDC research indicates the costs associated with extending the life cycle of servers beyond three years are higher than the costs to refresh. Refreshing older equipment can reduce spending on maintenance and service agreements, reduce spending on power, decrease the amount of space required for processing, eliminate high lease extension rates, and/or capture depreciation advantages. Beyond the financial benefits, the proactive management of datacenter infrastructure can improve performance and agility, limit exposure and risk because of downtime, increase visibility to comply with regulatory and compliance audits, and rightsize the datacenter based on actual consumption metrics for overall efficiency. This IDC white paper quantifies the wide range of benefits realized through proactive datacenter asset life-cycle management. Proactive asset life-cycle management and the related technology refreshes, which are critical elements of this management approach, are typically difficult to execute and thus rarely performed anywhere near an optimal level. The difficulty stems from a number of sources but is primarily due to the complexities involved with identifying all of the IT services that may be affected during the process of re-provisioning, re-establishing connections, and re-allocating applications, which are on each asset. A successful infrastructure refresh is dependent upon a solid level of understanding about what gear is in place today and why it is there and having a systematic and trusted workflow approach that is able to accomplish the following: Design and orchestrate change management processes Allocate human and technical resources required for change Determine optimal connectivity of power and networking Create documentation for auditing purposes Establish access to analytics and performance metrics The discipline required for the entire organization — everyone who interacts with datacenter resources — to adhere to and implement the best practices in asset life-cycle management is also necessary to handle the increasing pressure on the IT organization.
